In recent years I have become more and more aware of how language works within human societies. Part of this has to do with my recent studies with the Mdwankanton Dakota religious practices to better understand what was being said in their ceremonies. More recently I have become fascinated with the work of Gilah Yelin Hirsch and her descriptions of the development of alphabetic languages. In particular their relationship with shamanistic practices. I also view music and art as languages as well. Especially how imagery and symbolism work to pass information not only from one individual to the next, but also how information is passed through time. In particular I have recently become interested in early cave painting and how they act as a teaching mechanism for young men of the paleolithic era, and even of today. In particular I am currently fascinated with the recent work of David S. Whitley in his book Cave Paintings and the Human Spirit; The Origin of Creativity and Belief. The link below will take you to a listing on some of my thought on how humans use, and miss-use, language.
