This area reflects my thought, observations and other ideas on language. This will include its origins, development throughout time, verbal and non-verbal forms, use and miss-use in society, its power to move people and much more. After all, "the pen is mightier than the sword." |

The first entry I want to make regarding language has to do with the definition that was given in the quote I gave for the opening of the Anthropology section of this web site. That quote came from the on-line dictionary of Merriam-Webster. In particular the second definition which states; anthropology - " theology dealing with the origin, nature, and destiny of human beings." Anthropology is a Theology? "The study of God and God's relation to the world. (Merriam-Webster On-line)." I am an American Anthropologist who's philosophy may be considered "Boazian" in its nature. Meaning a follower of the "father of American Anthropology; Franz Boaz." He is famed for applying the scientific method to the study of culture and societies. Now my conundrum is "how can Anthropology, a science, be a theology, the study of God and God's relation to the world, when it adheres to the principles of Darwinism and Evolution?" Is Merriam-Webster ( here on referred to as MW) saying that Evolution is Theology? It is a religion unto itself? Anthropology is a religion? So, as an Anthropology professor, does this mean I can start to file my taxes as a minister would? (There are some extra tax breaks the clergy gets) I think that if I did the IRS would come knocking on my door. As is now obvious my main problem is that the Science of Anthropology is being called Theology. A false dichotomy statement that is basically broken down to "Science is a Religion!" This is not the first time that this has happened in history. A little over two-thousand years-a-go a there was a group of people who were put to death for their new religion based on physical measurable evidence. Their theoretical equations were seemingly flawless and could be repeated over and over again with the same answer happening each time. It was so flawless that in fact, it was in competition with the leading organized religion of the day; Hellenism. (someone please correct me if I am off on the exact time periods in history. I will make the change for future viewers. :) The governing officials of the day saw it fit to eliminate this challenger to the divine glory of the Goddess Hellen and had the followers of this new religion put to death. The father of this new religion was named Pythagoras; his followers that were put to death were called the Pythagoreans. Today we are all introduced to the "evil religion" of Pythagoras in our High-Schools. We see him as giving us the theorem of "A2 + B2 = C2." Yes, the religion that was so feared in its day, is now called "Mathematics." So, I hold in my faith that someday the theology we now call Anthropology, will hold such laws that are true and unchangeable so as to hold the same theological status as our modern mathematics. Thank You, MW. You have given me new hope for the future. :)
